The year 2021 is marked by a fair share of major historical and challenging events. The COVID-19 pandemic still holds its reign around the world, and with the new variation of Omicron, the world is kept in a state of emergency. There were other notable events in Indonesia’s energy sector, and as an Indonesia’s think tank, it is important for us to feature them to reflect. We also evaluate those events and share to public as a part of lesson learned. “Indonesia Energy Kaleidoscope 2021” provides valuable insights on the dynamic of some specific Indonesia’s energy sector issues. PYC research team has selected eight major events in Indonesia’s energy sector throughout 2021. Those events include policy and regulation updates, renewable energy developments, energy market, and international issues that impacted Indonesia’s energy sector. Although Indonesia’s energy sector faced formidable challenges in 2021, but there are also new opportunities for development in the energy sector. One example is an increasing development of renewable energy in all countries, especially during the global energy crisis. The issues highlighted in 2021 shows that the global energy crisis is also affecting multiple sectors, especially the economy. Therefore, the government is committed to promoting the use of renewable energy by updating and establishing a number of regulations. At the same time, the government is also working to improve the governance of the energy sector to further increase the investment and utilization of the country’s energy resources. All of these efforts are aimed at helping Indonesia achieve energy security in the near future and prevent the negative effect of the energy crisis. The energy transition is unavoidable for all of us. Therefore, we must face the challenges, adapt, and thrive in this ever-changing industry. We hope you find this report useful to your discussion and thinking.
