The Question of Red tells the story of two lovers, Amba and Bhisma, driven apart by one of the bloodiest Communist purges in the 20th century—the massacres that took place in Indonesia between 1965 and 1968 in which some 1 million people were killed. From rural Java and Yogyakarta to the prison camps of Buru Island, where some 12,000 alleged Communists were incarcerated without trial during the Suharto administration, the lives of the central characters interpret the Mahabharata—that timeless allegory of war within a family—with a modern twist. Published in Indonesian last year as Amba: Sebuah Novel, Laksmi Pamuntjak’s novel has enjoyed three reprinting within four months. Laksmi Pamuntjak has published two collections of poetry, Ellipsis (2005), recommended by Suhayl Saadi in the Herald UK Books of the Year pages, and The Anagram (2007), as well as Perang, Langit dan Dua Perempuan (2006), a treatise on violence and the Iliad, the short story collection The Diary of R.S.: Musings on Art (2006), and four editions of the award-winning Jakarta Good Food Guide. Co-founder of Aksara Bookstore, Pamuntjak has participated in numerous international literary events. Her poems, short stories and essays have also been published in several international journals, including the preface to Not a Muse: International Anthology of Women’s Poetry (2008).
