This novel discusses the life journey of a woman named Bongsoon, with the story told from the perspective of Jjang. Jjang is the youngest child in her family, which consists of her father, mother, older brother, and sister. She also has another sister (non-blood) named Bongsoon, who was taken in by her mother when Bongsoon was 10 years old. In Jjang's family, Bongsoon was responsible for helping Jjang's mother manage the household, and she was also the one who took care of Jjang from infancy until Jjang was around 5-6 years old. In this story, Jjang tells us about the hardships of her sister Bongsoon's life. She describes how difficult her sister's life has been, from childhood to middle age. Bongsoon faces a series of challenges that seem never-ending. From this novel, we learn about womanhood in the 1960s in Korea, where women's emancipation was not yet widespread. At that time, South Korea was not the developed country it is today; it was still developing. The novel gives us a perspective on Korea that we are not familiar with. Reading this novel, we can contemplate an important lesson: every decision made in life, no matter how small, matters and can lead to either happiness or sorrow.
