Goosebumps might become the perfect word to describe the experience when reading this book. I was shocked about the digital sexual assault that is discussed in this book. I cannot imagine how a group of people working together to produce, consume, and spread illegal mature videos. Not to mention, their targets/victims were underage girls. It’s crazy. Previously, I had never thought to read this book until I read a footnote in a novel that I previously read called “Confessions” where there’s a bit of explanation about a digital sexual crime that happened in South Korea called “Nth Room”. Fortunately, there's a book discussing this topic, and thank god when I checked the book in the local library here in Jakarta. I noticed a copy of this book translated into Bahasa Indonesia. Then, I excitedly grabbed the book and borrowed it from the library. Long story short, this book talked about the journey of two campus journalists who investigated digital sexual assault. They initially wanted to join a journalist competition and planned to take a sexual assault in the messaging app. However, as they dig deeper, they notice a very SHOCKING fact, there’s a massive sexual assault happening digitally in a messaging app called Telegram. In this app, there’s a group created as a place for people to join, where their main activities are to consume, produce, and spread illegal mature videos where the actors in the video are ****** underage. The author highlighted couple things that become challenges in dealing with this issue. Firstly, the criminals often threaten the victim by saying these girls' actions would be reported to their parents or teachers. It prevented more victims from reporting the problems they encountered. Secondly, the police have difficulty finding the criminals because this sexual harassment happened in apps managed by foreign countries. There will be a long bureaucracy waiting for them to get permission from the app for further investigation. Third, South Korea does not have regulations/laws that specifically explain the sanctions for criminals who are involved in digital sexual harassment. The authors argued that the government policy failed to understand the urgency of this problem. The governments also failed to differentiate the digital crime and sexual crime. This digital sexual crime is most likely put in trial based on digital crime. Reading this book also gave me a bit of perspective on the authors’ investigation and how difficult the investigation is. They even experienced an anxiety disorder and delusional disorder. Appreciate their effort. I mean they working tirelessly to build awareness about the urgency of this issue to the public, and even need to deal with the side effects of this investigation. I cannot believe that I’ve written a long paragraph, but this book was so GOOD in my opinion. It’s very detailed not only about the problem but also about the quest that authors needed to face while investigating the problem. One note, you need to prepare a note and pen to read the details of the topics, like the date, the terminology, and so on, you name it. But, don’t worry the writing style was really good. There will be no difficulty in reading/understanding this book (at least the book that has been translated to Bahasa Indonesia by “Penerbit Haru”). Enjoy reading. Cheers.
