This novel has shifted my perspective on murder stories. I found myself craving to understand the motives behind Kajii’s actions. But as I read, it became clear that Kajii is portrayed not just as a suspect, but as someone deeply hungry to be understood. Perhaps that’s why she finally agreed to speak with the journalist after Rika wrote a letter asking about her recipe, which turns out to be a vital part of Kajii’s identity.
